Brian is one of the incredible Open Arms Academy teachers. He recently shared his view on the current situation in Kenya.
What made you want to become a teacher at Open Arms Academy?
I understand what life is like for these children. As a young boy, I lost both my parents. Life was hard. I slept on the streets, hungry every night. But I was given a second chance. I was taken in by a family and enrolled in school. This changed my life. I want to give others the same chance of a future.
What impact is Covid having on the children?
Life is dangerous. People have lost their jobs pushing them further into poverty. With no work, many people turn to drugs and alcohol. Child labor is common. Children are being forced to work to help feed their families. I’ve seen children, so desperate for food they sneak into houses in the dark to steal. Children are vulnerable at home. Especially girls. One of my students, had a baby 4 days ago. She was 13-years-old. She was naïve and taken advantage of. Nobody was there to protect her.
Why is it so important to get children back into school?
School gives more than an education. It provides love, protection and nourishment. When their basic needs are met, children can begin to learn. We can ensure that the children are eating regularly. If they are sick, we can get them help. It is so much more than teaching. People might not understand this so let me say it plainly. School saves children’s lives!
I am so grateful for you. You are the reason children get to be in Brian's class.
